Startling research reveals that more than 41% of the population of Virginia has no dental insurance. Dental care for uninsured residents of Richmond is limited. In order to combat this crucial issue facing Richmond communities, the Richmond Smiles program offers residents a mobile, affordable and easily accessible alternative to obtaining necessary dental care.
Richmond Smiles has a mission to provide dental treatments and services throughout the Richmond Metropolitan area. The program, utilizing a handicap accessible, state-of-the-art commercial RV, fully equipped with two dental examination rooms and on-site X-ray capabilities, is essentially a 40-ft long dental office on wheels.
Richmond Smiles is a collaboration between the Virginia Department of Health, Capital Area Health Network (CAHN), the Richmond City Health District (RCHD); the program, specifically targeting indigent adults, pregnant women, children and residents without dental insurance, will begin serving communities throughout the Richmond Metropolitan area beginning April 7, 2008. The unit will periodically visit and park at four locations on a weekly basis, Monday – Thursday. The locations include:
- Richmond Justice Services
- Richmond Community Health Department
- Ramsey Memorial Church (Southside)
- Hotchkiss Community Center (Northside)
CAHN and RCHD will provide staffing for the Richmond Smiles high-tech, mobile unit. CAHN has healthcare facilities throughout the Richmond Metropolitan area, providing medical, mental health, social services and dental services. The RCHD provides an array of public health services citywide for Richmond residents; RCHD clinical services are provided at its Tenth Street Clinic (downtown).
The initial drive to establish the mobile dental program was made through the efforts of Dr. Donald Stern, Director of the Richmond City Health District. “Without the offer of the mobile unit from and VDH and our partnership with Tracy Causey, CAHN’s CEO, the Richmond Smiles program would not be possible,” said Dr. Stern. |
